wrapping up: good bye/reviews/pictures

I feel like I’ve just come out of a really deep slumber or maybe I’m just going into one. Nothing could have prepared me for the massive ‘thing’ that was devising a show. The past 6 weeks and beyond has consisted of Phoebe and I scratching and scouring our brains and bodies to piece together the show that was GORGE. And then the 5th of March came. Opening night… and gushes of bodies swarmed into the Old Folks hall and in a haze we handed the show over to a bunch of friends and family and strangers. I think I’d totally lost sight of any sort of concept of audience response which I think turned into a good thing – what a surprise it was to hear people laugh and sigh and smile and look disturbed and clap. I cannot stress how amazingly lucky I was to have been able to work with Phoebe. Anybody who has worked with her will back me up in saying that she is this wonderfully creative and open and unique being that just brings magic to everything she touches. I miss you already Phoebe and sometimes wish you weren’t a grown up who is at Uni doing a majorly important law degree. No, I don’t – I am happy for you. But I still miss you.

For anyone who missed the show or is interested here are some really lovely reviews:

Some things I learnt from devising a show:
1.       People from all walks of life and your past will seek out your work and support you and come to your show and bring friends and be amazing
2.       You realise how amazing and giving your friends are whether it be lending you lights, speakers, baking you cakes or even just letting you rant in their ear for hours about weird shit
3.       It is really rewarding putting on your own work as opposed to doing random projects if you are not connected with them in some way.

Anyway I would just like to thank everyone for coming to our little show. It meant so much to have such wonderful audiences every night. And also just thank you to everyone who helped in someway or another - we can't tell you how much we appreciate it.  Here is a little collection of photos from our journey.
Lot's of love, virginia.

phoebe+i outside our shop staple - geoff's emporium (wearing matching sunglasses)
phoebe and virginia's pride and joy - cobham's corn field
painting pig 'porko'

craft dud - this 'baby corn doll' that burst into flames didn't quite make the cut. #reject
after weeks of deciding what to call our main 'corn' character we decided on 'Cobham'. Look what we found on the wall of the Old Folk's Ass on the day we left the venue. #spooky

What is your favourite food?
The left over juice stuff of a Japanese teriyaki meal. Just the sauce.
What are you doing at the moment apart from GORGE?
Working on a show with an amazing group of senior citizens for ATC's Arts Festival show. It’s going to be performed in the Balmoral Bowling club and it’s going to be bloody good.
What is one thing that scares you about performing the show?
I don’t wanna tell you in case it comes true which would just be the most horrible thing ever.
Tell us a food memory.
Once I stole icing off my cousins uncut birthday cake and got slapped on the bottom.
Once I ate some chocolate cake and felt something squirming in my mouth. Under the brown cake were a dozen festering brown slugs. One had been bitten in half in my mouth.
Once I hid pick’n’mix lollies inside a plain breadroll at the supermarket so I didn’t have to pay for them.
Have there been any cast/crew scandals?
One day Phoebe and I burst into tears. Too much oestrogen, dudes.
What was your first word?
‘Girl’
What do your parents have to say about the show?
“Should we come to this one?”
Tell us about a time when you’ve overdone it (A Tale of Overdunnit).
Every party/event where there’s a snack table
What are your top five picks of the Fringe?
Everyone must go and see Thomas Monckton in MOVING STATIONARY – hands down best show I’ve seen. I won’t name any more because it’s too hard to choose only 5 – so much good stuff, so little money.
Can you describe the show in three words?
pulsating, fly, McGuilt
Any final words for our readers?
Ummm… it would be so wonderful if you could book a ticket. You can do so here: http://www.iticket.co.nz/events/2013/mar/gorge

FRINGE SHOWS WE HAVE SEEN #2

Digital and Visual Arts

Stratton/Reihana-Wilson

TALK

Mon 18 & Wed 20 February, Mon 25 & Wed 27 February & Fri 1 March, 8.00pm
I have a lot of friends that recently finished film school. Seeing a large pool of talented people struggling to get their own projects up, I decided to try making a feature length film comprised of shorts, allowing all of these people to be involved in something big.

The films aim to explore the idea of conversation - why, where, when we do it, and how it affects us. In eleven vignettes, we see people talking to each other in an attempt to make sense of themselves and the world they're in. Every time we speak we reveal a wealth of information about ourselves, yet none of us know how we will be interpreted.

Virginia wants to buy a bird. Laura just had her last exam. Dan thinks Will is nice. Alice is pregnant. Denny is sad. Peter might jump off a bridge. Renee is trying. Zara thinks Rose is a hypocrite. Julie's mum is dead. Bridget wants to be an actress. Karen hates pink.

Everyone needs to talk. We all hope someone is listening. Everyone needs to talk. We all hope someone is listening.

PHOEBE MASON

What is your favourite food?
I’ve answered this question with chicken before...but really maybe my favourite is banana milk.
What are you doing at the moment apart from GORGE?
I’m in my final year of a Law/Arts degree, majoring in Politics and Philosophy.
What is one thing that scares you about performing the show?
Doing it really badly.
Tell us a food memory.
When I was about 15, two friends and I were having a really weird antsy day, and just before dinner we decided to go for a walk, during which it poured with torrential rain, and we played on a playground (bloody delinquents) and then when we got home Mum had cooked this incredible roast chicken- it was the best meal I think I’ve ever had.
Who is the person you are most excited to have see the show?
My brother (via video link to Norway.)
Have there been any cast/crew scandals?
Yeah I’m secretly/publicly in love with Virginia.
What was your first word?
Doh. ...
Who should keen punters bring with them to the show?
An appetite! (for theatre)
What do your parents have to say about the show?
Why is there so much corn in the lounge?’
Tell us about a time when you’ve overdone it (A Tale of Overdunnit).
Chewing gum on holiday in Turangi. There’s a warning on the back of the pack that says excess consumption may lead to a laxative effect and they’re not joking.
What are your top five picks of the Fringe?
Can you describe the show in three words?
Joyous. Surprising. ...Gorge.
Any final words for our readers?
Come along! Bring a date! Bring your mother! Bring your mature child! Let’s all have a laugh.

melon baby

today in rehearsals i...

  • did an interview with a really cool guy called kermath that will air on bfm on thursday morning (and sunday?)
  • cried because my car had been towed
  • watched a helicopter circle us (this same thing happened yesterday)
  • watched a couple at uni pash
  • watched the "pashing couple" guy (possibly) sucking the girls nipple
  • got overwhelmed
  • got hot
  • used my body to pretend i was bread that was then 'kneaded' by phoebe
  • stopped crying because i found out my dad had actually moved my car so it wasn't towed
  • bought a bunch of streamers from the LOOKSHARP store
